Francis’s remains were buried in the new basilica in 1230, but the brothers concealed them extraordinarily well. Almost six hundred years later, in September 1818, Pope Pius VII gave his permission for a search to be undergone below the main altar of the lower church in the basilica.

Francis’s tomb was discovered two months later; his remains were exhumed and a new crypt was built to house them. This crypt—directly beneath the lower church, which is directly beneath the upper church—is visited today by millions of pilgrims each year.
